Universes
Dragon Ball Multiverse
- The Dragon Ball multiverse, or the Dragon Ball world,
is the chain of universes within the Dragon Ball series. There are
currently twelve in total, as well as an artifical one, and every
two universes whose designations add up to 13 are twin universes
- Each universe is governed by a Supreme Kai and God of Destruction,
who act to balance creation and destruction. The entirety of the
multiverse is ruled by Zeno and (after the "Future" Trunks Saga)
Future Zeno, who share the ultimate authority over each universe.
Formerly, there were 18 universes in total, but Zeno erased 6 of
them when he was angry.
- Ruler: Grand Zeno
-
Universe 1
- Universe 1the Supreme Universe is the first of the twelve
universes in the Dragon Ball series. It includes planets, stars, and
a large amount of galaxies. Universe 1 is linked with Universe 12,
creating a twin universe. Universe 1 is one of the four universes
that have an average mortal level above 7 on Zeno's scale. Thus its
inhabitants, both divine and mortal, are exempt from being erased,
along with the inhabitants of Universes 5, 8, and 12. Universe 1 is
the universe with the highest mortal level.
-
Universe 2
- Universe 2 the Gentle Universe is the second of the
twelve universes in the Dragon Ball series. It includes planets,
stars, and a large amount of galaxies. Universe 2 is linked with
Universe 11, creating a twin universe. It is the universe with the
sixth highest mortal level. It was erased in the Tournament of
Power. Universe 2 is restored along with all its inhabitants via
Android 17's wish after winning the Tournament of Power.
-
Universe 3
- Universe 3 the Spiritual Universe, is the third of the
twelve universes in the Dragon Ball series. It includes planets,
stars, and a large amount of galaxies. Universe 3 is linked with
Universe 10, creating a twin universe. It is the universe with
the seventh highest mortal level. It is erased in the Tournament
of Power when Agnilasa was knocked off the fighting stage.
Universe 3 is restored along with all its inhabitants via Android
17's wish after winning the Tournament of Power.
-
Universe 4
- Universe 4 the Conspiracy Universe, is the fourth of
the twelve universes in the Dragon Ball series. It includes
planets, stars, and a large amount of galaxies. Universe 4 is
linked with Universe 9, creating a twin universe. It is the
universe with the ninth highest mortal level. It is erased
in the Tournament of Power. Universe 4 is restored along with
all its inhabitants via Android 17's wish after winning the
Tournament of Power.
-
Universe 5
- Universe 5 the Balanced Universe , is the fifth of
the twelve universes in the Dragon Ball series. It includes
planets, stars, and a large amount of galaxies. Universe 5 is
linked with Universe 8, creating a twin universe. Universe 5
is one of the four universes that have an average mortal level
above 7 on Zeno's scale. Thus its inhabitants, both mortal and
divine, are exempt from being erased, along with the inhabitants
of Universes 1, 8, and 12. It is the universe with the third
highest mortal level.
-
Universe 6
- Universe 6 the Challenging Universe, is the sixth
of the twelve universes in the Dragon Ball series. It includes
planets, stars, a large amount of galaxies. Universe 6 is linked
with Universe 7, creating a twin universe. Being a twin universe,
almost identical to Universe 7, any planets that have existed
and/or exist in Universe 7 will also likely have existed or
exist in Universe 6. The majority of planets are unknown, but
it is known that Universe 6 has an Earth, although the
Earthlings of that world had ravaged it with wars, rendering
the species extinct until Beerus revived the planet and all of
its inhabitants with the Super Dragon Balls. Planet Sadala,
which was destroyed in Universe 7, still exists in Universe 6.
It is the universe with the tenth lowest mortal level. Universe
6 is eventually erased during the Tournament of Power. Universe
6 is restored along with all its inhabitants via Android 17’s
wish after winning the Tournament of Power. In the manga,
Universe 6 is now ranked second from the bottom on the mortal
level due to Universe 7's wish raising theirs.
-
Universe 7
- Universe 7 known as Our Universe, is the seventh
of twelve universes in the Dragon Ball series. It includes
planets, stars, galaxies (either four or countless, depending
on the source), the contents of intergalactic space,
and all matter and energy. Universe 7 is linked with Universe
6, creating a twin universe. This universe is where the entirety
of the Dragon Ball series takes place, except for the Universe
6 Saga in Dragon Ball Super, when Goku and the others go to a
neutral area between Universe 7 and Universe 6, the "Future"
Trunks Saga taking place between Universe 7 and Universe 10,
and the Universe Survival Saga taking place in Zeno's Palace
for the Zeno Expo and the Null Realm for the Tournament of Power
between eight of the twelve universes. Universe 7 also ranks
as the second from the bottom on the mortal level scale as a
3.18 according to Zeno and Future Zeno. In the manga, Universe
7 now ranks as the third from the bottom on the mortal level
scale due to their wish for reviving the erased universes.
-
Universe 8
- Universe 8 the Diligent Universe, is the eighth of
the twelve universes in the Dragon Ball series. It includes
planets, stars, and a large amount of galaxies. Universe 8 is
linked with Universe 5, creating a twin universe. Universe 8
is one of the four universes that have an average mortal level
above 7 on Zeno's scale. Thus its inhabitants, divine and mortal
alike, are exempt from being erased, along with the inhabitants
of Universes 1, 5, and 12. It is the universe with the fourth
highest mortal level.
-
Universe 9
- Universe 9the Improvised Universe, is the ninth of
the twelve universes in the Dragon Ball series. It included
planets, stars, and a large amount of galaxies. Universe 9 is
linked with Universe 4, creating a twin universe.
- Unlike the relationships between Universe 6 and 7's
respective Supreme Kais and Gods of Destruction, Sidra and Roh's
roles appeared to be strongly contrasted, as Sidra appeared to
be the benevolent one, while Roh was more short-tempered.
- According to Roh, Universe 9 did not tolerate weakness or
failure, albeit it could have merely been Roh's own personal
and selfish views. Universe 9 was ranked at the bottom of the
mortal level scale as a 1.86 according to Zeno and Future Zeno.
Bergamo, Lavender and Basil noted that the conditions of Universe
9 were very difficult, much like a waste dump, making it a real
struggle to survive in it.
- After Team Universe 7 defeated Team Universe 9 in the
Tournament of Power, Zeno and Future Zeno erased the universe,
giving everyone an example of what will happen if a universe
loses in the Tournament of Power. In the anime, Universe 1's
Supreme Kai Anato then explained how Team Universe 7's member
Goku saved the universes with low mortal levels by starting this
tournament, giving all of them a chance to survive. Universe 9
is restored along with all its inhabitants via Android 17's wish
after winning the Tournament of Power.
-
Universe 10
- Universe 10 the Macho Universe, is the tenth of the
twelve universes in the Dragon Ball series. It was comprised of
many planets, stars, and a large amount of galaxies. Universe
10 is linked with Universe 3, creating a twin universe. It is
the universe with the eighth highest mortal level.
-
Universe 11
- Universe 11 the Justice Universe, is the eleventh of
the twelve universes in the Dragon Ball series. It includes
planets, stars, and a large amount of galaxies. Universe 11 is
linked with Universe 2, creating a twin universe. It is the
universe with the fifth highest mortal level. It is erased
in the Tournament of Power when Goku and Frieza knocked Jiren
off after combined attack, securing Universe 7's victory.
Universe 11 is restored along with all its inhabitants via
Android 17's wish after winning the Tournament of Power.
-
Universe 12
- Universe 12 the Ultimate Universe, is the twelfth of
the twelve universes in the Dragon Ball series. It includes
planets, stars, and a large amount of galaxies. Universe 12 is
linked with Universe 1, creating a twin universe. Universe 12 is
one of the four universes that have an average mortal level above
7 on Zeno's scale. Thus its inhabitants, both divine and mortal,
are exempt from being erased, along with the inhabitants of Universes
1, 5, and 8. It is the universe with the second highest mortal level.
Powerful Beings
-
Grand Zeno
- Grand Zeno the Omni-King,is the supreme ruler of
all the Multiverse and seemingly its most powerful being. Since the
events of the "Future" Trunks Saga, Zeno co-rules jointly with his
future counterpart.
Appearance
- Zeno is very short and small, with a rather large oval-shaped
head. He primarily has sky blue skin, except for two sections from
his ears to the middle of each eye on both sides of his head, which
are purple. He has small round eyes, and small rounded grey "ears".
His main attire is a magenta and yellow lined coat, with yellow pants
and magenta shoes. He wears a black and white shirt underneath, with
the kanji for "all" (全) on the front. He typically has a blank
expression on his face.
Personality
- Like many deities, such as the angels, Zeno seems to have a
general indifference about life, as well as all the other stuff
within the multiverse, having destroyed six of the eighteen
universes after a bout of anger, and also destroying several planets
in a game he played with his future self 202 times. In the manga
version of the Universe Survival Saga, however, it is implied by
Grand Minister that the real reason why he destroyed the
aforementioned six universes was simply to get rid of what he felt
were too many universes. He apparently wished to decrease that
number further for some time, giving no excuses for such a decision
beyond saying 12 universes are a bit too much to keep track of,
with the Tournament of Power being the perfect opportunity to do
so. Even more, this indifference seems to extend to the gods
themselves, seemingly rendering him a remorseless being to his
peers, and was shown to not even be affected by Roh's horrified
crying out of his name. He also shows some degree of sadism, as
shortly after erasing Universe 9, he proceeded alongside his future
counterpart to say "bye-bye!" in a joking tone, as well as being
heard laughing childishly while erasing the universe. He and his
counterpart also said "squish" in a light-hearted, delighted tone
when they were erasing Universe 3. Furthermore, he seems to be
incapable of understanding the horrible action of erasing trillions
of lives in a single universe, since he and his future counterpart
wonder why everyone in the Tournament of Power stop fighting after
witnessing the entire universe getting erased.
-
Angels
- The Angels are life-forms of extremely
high status within the hierarchy of the multiverse. Their role is
to guide and teach Gods of Destruction to master their destructive
capabilities as well as also serving them as their personal attendants.
In the case of the Grand Minister, however, his duties are to serve
and to advise Zeno. As deities, they possess godly ki. Whis has
mentioned the Angel Realm and his home planet. In the manga and anime
it was revealed that the Grand Minister is the father of all other
known Angels, with Kusu being the oldest child.
Racial Traits
- Angels have no need for food, though they can eat as a luxury.
They also have no need for sleep, unlike Gods of Destruction and
Supreme Kais.Angels are almost completely unable to die, with the
only way they can be removed from existence being if they are
"eradicated" without a trace - which will occur automatically if
they violate the Angel laws. However, if directly commanded by the
respective Angel's God of Destruction, they can bypass the only
Angel law. This is seen when Whis rewinds time for the Z fighters
to kill Frieza after he resurrected and attained the Golden form
under Beerus' command, as well as when Whis resurrected Frieza under
Beerus' command. There are many other instances of these.Angels
have been seen to have abilities not generally seen among mortals
or even gods, such as Ultra Instinct, Warp and Temporal Do-Over.
It is additionally mentioned by Beerus to Vegeta that Angels such
as Whis are constantly using the Ultra Instinct technique, and as
such are comfortable using it without bodily strain (similar to Goku's
principle for Super Saiyan Full Power).
Appearance
- Angels appear as humanoid creatures with pale blue skin, white
hair, violet eyes, and various heights. When at full power an Angel
possesses a blue halo around their necks, with the exception of the
Grand Minister, whose halo floats vertically behind his head, when
not at full power no halo is present. Their clothing bares similarities
to Zeno, while the patterns on their clothes resemble the Gods of
Destruction they serve.
- Their white hair, occasionally puffed sleeves and pastel skin
gives them a striking resemblance to the Supreme Kais as well,
giving Angels a strong visual link to all factions of the godly
establishment.
Personality
- Much like Zeno and Future Zeno, whom they serve, the Angels are
generally remorseless and indifferent, not caring at all about the
lives of others. According to their laws, Angels must remain neutral,
siding with neither good nor evil, and cannot ask for the assistance
in saving their universe if it's ever in danger. That includes not
only mortals, but also the gods themselves. Beyond this rule, however,
the Angels are not restricted in what they can or cannot do.
Furthermore, as amoral as they may be, Angels can lend their
assistance to others, such as Whis rewinding time for Goku for a
second chance to finish off Frieza; another is when Whis tells Future
Trunks and Future Mai that he is going to go and alter the future
timeline by warning Future Beerus of Goku Black and Zamasu's Project
Zero Mortals. They also follow the commands of their lords, the lords
being the Gods of Destruction, Supreme Kais, but also the Omni-Kings
and the Grand Priest.
- This indifferent behavior is exemplified several times, as the
Grand Minister announces universal destruction with a smile, Vados
prompting Champa and Beerus to fight on their birthday, Mohito
chuckling after the destruction of his Universe and his fellow gods
(although this may have been due to the fact that his gods mortals
were incompetent and was just glad to be free of them as opposed to
actual indifference as he was seen to be genuinely upset at his
universe's inability to gather warriors in a timely manner), and
perhaps most notably of all, Whis' open and nonchalant mockery to
the gods of his Universe, as, when his father declares that the Angels
of the Universes are the only beings to be spared by the two Zenos,
he simply states his position is different than theirs, and laughs
at them, establishing that despite having spent hundreds of millions
of years at the side of their Destroyers, Angels do not tend to
involve themselves emotionally with anything or anyone, except
perhaps, with each other. However, there are some exceptions to this:
It has been shown that Universe 10’s Kusu has fun with her fellows
Rumsshi and Gowasu, and that she was also shown deeply grief-stricken
when her Universe was erased from existence following Team Universe
10's elimination from the Tournament of Power, calling her lord's
name (Rumsshi) one last time in mourning. Camparri was worried about
his God of Destruction and Supreme Kai and he seemed to be involucrate
in his team as he was, at some point, shocked, by some eliminations
of Universe 3. In the manga, he also lied to Zeno about what Mule
said, to potentially spare his gods from being erased. Sour also
looked solemn after his universe was erased and did show some respect
for the efforts of some of his Universe's team members. Vados
appeared to be genuinely sad after Universe 6 had lost even despite
having earlier mocked them and bowed to Champa in respect afterwards.
Whis also indulged himself into the performance of the Universe 7
Team, showcasing quite a few times his serious side, despite having
laughed at Beerus for his fate, and showed genuine concern when
Goku collapsed from the strain of using Ultra Instinct. This indicates
that Angels are capable of caring for others but they are also fully
capable of faking that they don't. In addition, the Grand Minister
showed approval of Android 17's selfless wish to restore the Universes
despite earlier having grinned at their destruction and praised
Universe 7 not only for their battle power but also for their
selflessness while all the Angels behind him, including those who
had remained nonchalant and even maliciously smiled at the erasure
of their Universes, smiled in genuine approval and happiness, further
showing that they aren't as heartless as they show themselves to be.
It's possible that said Angels had suspected that their Universes
would eventually be restored and therefore merely put up a façade
of coldly not caring.
-
Gods of destruction
- The Gods of Destruction, also called Destroyers
in the Funimation dub, are deities who destroy planets, races, or
threats that put the development of their respective universes at
risk, as opposed to the Supreme Kais, the Gods of Creation, who create
and fill planets with life, in order to maintain the balance of the
universe.Along with the Kais, they rule and oversee the formerly
eighteen, currently twelve universes, with each universe having its
own destroyer.
- Unlike the Angels and the Supreme Kais, with whom they work alongside,
and who are all members of the same species, respectively, both being
naturally divine, the Gods of Destruction vary widely in species, with
none sharing the same species, except for Beerus and Champa, who are
twins, and are mortal-turned-divine individuals from naturally mortal
species.
Overview
- Originally, there was a God of Destruction for each of the then
-existing eighteen universes until Zeno destroyed six of them, leaving
only twelve at the time of their introduction in Dragon Ball Super.
Once every millennium, the Kais and the Gods of Destruction go to each
other's realms and hold a coordination meeting. In some occasions,
the gods can also come together to deal with threats to existence or
stability of their universe or universes. Gods of Destruction, due to
being considerably stronger than Kais by nature, are usually more
capable of dealing with universal threats than Kais, however, they
seem to have no obligation to heed the commands of Kais, and thus
tend to be whimsical as to which threats to eliminate.
- Despite their almost absolute authority, even the Gods of
Destruction have restrictions. They are not allowed travel through
time or allow anyone else to (though Whis can transport Beerus through
time to the Time Nest where Chronoa resides if he wishes to speak
with her or at her request as shown in the Xenoverse series). They
are also prohibited from fighting each other unless requested or
authorized in a safe area. In fact, if a God of Destruction violates
these restrictions or isn't doing their job to the best of their
ability, Zeno has the authority to remove or even erase them from
the position and appoint a new Destroyer.
Personality
- Though the Gods of Destruction may enjoy their duty, some going
as far as to revel in it, they are not inherently evil, as some can
be somewhat benevolent (in the case of Sidra), and do not seem to
revel in their destruction but instead use their powers to enforce
"justice" in their own universe by destroying only planets or anything
which they consider evil (like Belmod and the Pride Troopers), and
are actually well-mannered and kind-hearted when in a good mood or
at ease. Also, at least in the cases of Beerus and Champa, food is
their natural way to calm down and socialize, with them going as far
as becoming friends with mortals if they are pleased well enough,
though they remain serious and do not joke around when doing their
job.
- Also, unlike Angels, and like the Supreme Kais, they share the
emotions that mortals possess and are prone to the same revolt and
rage, which may cause them to commit abuse of their power, injustice,
evil, and tyranny. While the Gods of Destruction are generally fearless
of deities and mortals alike, they are shown to respect both the two
Zenos and the Grand Minister due to their position and power. This
fear causes them to ironically behave in a manner similar to how mortals
and deities react when in the presence of a God of Destruction or a
similarly powerful and/or high authority entity.
- While Gods of Destruction may destroy any individuals that oppose
them or causes them trouble through their actions (whether intentionally
or accidentally), they may spare mortals whom they find useful even if
they are evil, as Beerus tolerated Frieza and his empire despite Frieza
being evil to the core, though this was due to Frieza's willingness to
serve Beerus as his Agent of Destruction due to his fear of Beerus'
power, which was so great that King Cold ordered both his sons
(Cooler mentions being warned in Xenoverse 2) to never oppose Beerus.
Similarly, though he was disgusted by Frost's true nature, Champa
was willing to support him if he helped Team Universe 6 win the
Tournament of Destroyers.
Candidates and substitutes
- Despite their immense power and longevity, Gods of Destruction
are known to be capable of dying. Due to this, their angel attendant
will seek out and train potential replacements. The candidates do not
have to be of a divine race as mortals are selected as candidates if
they possess adequate power. The only known God of Destruction
candidate (破壊神候補 Hakaishin kōho) is Top of Universe 11,
although before, Jiren was chosen, but turned down the offer. Goku
and Vegeta of Universe 7 were both offered candidate positions by
their universe's guide angel, but turned down the offer due to simply
wanting to become stronger on their own. Candidates, once chosen and
accepted, can take on the power of destruction with training from an
angel to control its power and Godly Ki. Additionally, in the Xenoverse
series, Whis seeks to train Time Patrollers mainly in the hopes of
finding potential candidates to replace Beerus, though the Supreme
Kai of Time lashes out at him for trying to headhunt Time Patrol
personnel when he asks the Future Warrior if they would like to be
the next God of Destruction, thus presumably this practice is frowned
on by Chronoa and Elder Kai, though they still permit Whis to work
as an Instructor at the Time Patroller Academy. During a New Parallel
Quest, Whis secretly requests the Time Patrol's assistance in helping
him scout potential canididates to replace Beerus in the distant future
as Whis notes Beerus should remain God of Destruction for quite
sometime though he finds it preferable to have a perspective candidate
(presumably due to the amount of training involved to prepare a mortal
to acquire the divine power of a Destroyer).
- Gods of Destruction do not always work alone in their destruction
and sometimes can appoint someone else the duty of destroying, thus
becoming an Agent of Destruction (破壊の代行 Hakai no daikō). The
only example of this in Universe 7 being Frieza, who prior to Age
739 was known to aid Beerus in destroying things, and was also told
by him to destroy Planet Vegeta. Beerus also allowed Frieza to
maintain an galactic empire which controlled 70% of Universe 7.
Presumably Beerus also tolerated the activities of other members of
the Frieza Clan such as King Cold and Cooler, which is supported by
King Cold advising both of his sons not to challenge Beerus, which
may have played a role in allowing them to maintain a vast empire as
they respected Beerus' position as Universe 7's Destroyer. After
Frieza's resurrection, however, Beerus was less inclined to allow
Frieza to act freely, as he allowed Whis to turn back time to prevent
the Earth's destruction due to his love of Earth cuisine and having
become acquainted with Goku and his friends.
